What can SAB offer you ?
Leadership & Professional Growth
In SAB, there are a plethora of opportunities to grow in leadership. Through consistent use of professional communication with internal and external vendors, contracts, and campus partners you will gain extremely helpful skills, experience, and knowledge that will benefit you both in your education at Truman and in your career after. After becoming an established general member, you can apply to become a Chairperson of a committee. These Chair positions foster learning environments to constructively critique events prior to them being presented in the boardroom. You could also choose to pursue an executive position, where you can help form an SAB atmosphere that is professional, efficient, and creative.
Campus Impact
There are many Truman students that attend SAB events. As a part of planning an event, you will also be required to staff your own. You will be able to see the impact you make on campus as you watch students have fun, relax, and enjoy their downtime in a space you created. It pays off to see your hard work being admired and appreciated by Truman’s student body.
Valuable Relationships
There is a lot of work that goes into being a member of the Student Activities Board: handling event planning atop coursework and other organizational affiliation is stressful. You are never alone, because all of SAB is there to support you. When you join the board, you are connected with dozens of people just like you who want to provide something special for students at Truman. You will find that members of SAB consistently find ways to form bonds with each other despite difficulties and setbacks. Our members are extremely supportive and want you to grow, but will also hold you accountable when constructive criticism is needed. By the time you graduate, you will have developed numerous life long relationships and left your mark on the people around you.
Hands-On Experience
Being on SAB means you will be behind-the-scenes at the events you work. Since you will most likely be staffing events of all kinds, you will be exposed to the hands-on learning opportunities provided with our diverse events. Skills like these involve: setting up technology such as lighting, speakers, and stage equipment; acting as security for artists, comedians, and speakers; assembling photobooths, balloon arches, and lights (Holiday Lights); and so much more!
Creativity
Unique and diverse events are something SAB strives to accomplish in our planning process. In tandem with holding traditional events, members are always brainstorming ideas that are out-of-the-box. Some notable events are Alien Abduction Day, Pickling Party, Earth-A-Palooza, Drive-In movies, Ice Skating, and more! We aim to bring new event ideas to enhance the Truman experience, including yours!
Communication
SAB has approximately 30 students as of 2025. In this group of students, there are 30 different life experiences and perspectives. In and out the boardroom, communication is the biggest component of event planning and bringing entertainment to Truman’s campus. When you present a motion to your committee, Chair meeting, or Board meeting you will learn to express thoughts and ideas about the events you plan. Being able to articulate your plans in the boardroom is essential to progress your event and will also assist you in the environments of your education and/or careers.
